Gareth Southgate first caught the eye as a youngster with Crystal Palace - who used to play him as a midfielder - and moved to Villa Park in 1994 for a fee of £2.5million. Villa converted Southgate into an assured and cool centre-back who has poise on the ball and likes to bring it out of defence.
