German Astronaut

Ulrich Walter has been a Professor at the Institute of Astronautics at Munich University teaching and researching satellite technology since March 2003. In 1993 he successfully completed his assignment as a science astronaut and research specialist for the German D-2 Mission, living the dream of many scientists, travelling in space for 10 days on board the space shuttle Columbia and the European Space Station.

In detail

After his spaceflight he worked for another four years at DLR, managing a space imaging database project. He has published more than 40 scientific articles in various international journals and from 1998 till 2003 he presented the science TV programme MaxQ. He has been awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Wernher von Braun Medal.
