Michael holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from New York University School of Education and Performing Arts as well as a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies from New England Conservatory. He created and ran the Jazz Department at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1995 he received a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts for a program that he designed to teach the skills of jazz improvisation to professional orchestral musicians.
