Sven Goran Eriksson has a reputation as one of the most progressive coaches in world football. Eriksson made history in January 2001 when he became the first foreign coach of England; he was recruited by the FA from Lazio in February 2001 on a five-year contract. Eriksson's first game in charge was the 3-0 victory against Spain at Villa Park in a friendly international on 28th February 2001. Four subsequent wins in consecutive games ensured that Eriksson achieved the most successful start of any England coach.
