Sam Torrance is one of the most popular and charismatic golfers on the professional world stage. His contribution to the game was recognised at the end of 1996 when he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Sam has 32 world-wide tournament victories to his name and his successes have spanned a remarkable 30 years in the professional game of golf. In September 2002, seventeen years after his 15-foot birdie putt against Andy North, ended America's 28-year hold on the Ryder Cup, Torrance triumphed again at the same course, this time as Europe's non-playing captain. In the same way he raised his arms in a V for victory sign on the 18th green in 1985, Torrance held them aloft once again at the famous Belfry course. Europe had won back the trophy and the ecstatic fans saluted the popular Scot as much as his 12 players. Turning pro at the age of 16, and starting out on Tour at 17, Sam is the first golfer in European Tour history to notch up 600 tournaments. Holding 21 international titles, he has played in the Ryder Cup an astounding nine times. Not only has Sam been the stalwart of the team since 1981, he also enjoys popularity with the public and media that is unrivalled in the world of golf. He has appeared on national television numerous times and was the subject of BBC Television's This is Your Life, reviewing his life and achievements.
