Captain Chesley Sullenberger is an American airline transport pilot (ATP), safety expert, and accident investigator. He successfully carried out the emergency water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, offshore from Manhattan, New York City, on January 15, 2009, thus preventing any loss of life. There were 155 people on the plane. He is an international speaker on airline safety and has helped develop new protocols for airline safety.

Captain Sullenberger graduated with a B.S. from the United States Air Force Academy and a Masters degree from Purdue University, majoring in psychology and basic sciences and receiving a number of academic awards. A former U.S. Air Force (USAF) fighter pilot, he has served as an instructor and Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) safety chairman, accident investigator and national technical committee member. He has participated in several USAF and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident investigations. His ALPA safety work led to the development of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular. He was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Crew Resource Management (CRM) course used at his airline and has taught the course to hundreds of his colleagues.
