In 1975 Howard bought the family funeral business and by a process of tight cash control, acquisition in clusters and applied economies of scale the business grew so that 11 years later in 1986 it had 18 branches and a turnover of £3m The business was floated on the USM in 1986 and outstripped all public company competitors' growth and became the largest funeral company in the UK by 1987. After retiring from corporate life and writing his first book Howard became Chief Executive Officer of Ronson plc.
