James Murray Wells Founder of Glasses Direct

James (he prefers Jamie) Murray Wells is the founder of the highly successful internet company Glasses Direct. He managed to break the big opticians' hold on the market and has investors queuing up to help blow it further apart. Manufacturers were initially reluctant to endanger their relationships with high street opticians, but eventually relented and Jamie started selling specs over the internet in September 2004. The company estimates it ships a pair every few minutes round the clock, and that it has saved the UK public in excess of 25 million pounds on their glasses.

Jamie Murray Wells was awarded the Top Entrepreneur of 2005 in Startups.co.uk's run-down of the best business leaders of the year. Jamie takes an active interest in promoting UK entrepreneurialism, as a Make Your Mark ambassador for UK Enterprise, by providing advice, support and occasionally investment to other young entrepreneurs as well as being a National Judge for Enterprising Britain 2007 and also in 2008. Jamie was crowned the Revolution "Hot Shot" in 2009 and amoungst various other awards he will receive a Queen's Award for Enterprise. Jamie is an ambassador for National Enterprise Week.
