Dame Kelly Holmes President of Commonwealth Games England, Double Olympic Gold Medal Winning Athlete

Dame Kelly Holmes is one of Britain's most recognisable and admired athletes. She has won Olympic, European and World, Commonwealth medals. Kelly founded her own charity the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust in 2008, to which she is the active Chair, providing support to elite performers as they develop their career. She is a key member of the Ambassador Team for the London 2012 Olympic bid. Kelly was National School Sports Champion for 3 years under Gordon Brown and also chaired an Olympic Legacy Taskforce on behalf of David Cameron suggesting a School Olympics to create competitive sport within schools as part of the sporting legacy post London 2012, which has now been adopted as a policy.

In detail

Kelly first established her working career as a member of the British Army in 1988. Reaching the Rank of Sergeant, she decided to leave in 1997 to pursue a senior athletics career full time. Upon leaving, she was awarded an MBE for her services to the British Army and was honoured by the Queen in the 2005 New Year's honours with a Dame Hood. Kelly made history at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she achieved something that only 2 other women in the world have ever achieved and became the second British athlete to win 2 middle distance Gold Medals at the same Games in over 80 years.
