Oscar Pistorius South African Paralympic Runner and World Inspirational Figure

Oscar Pistorius is a South African Paralympic runner, whose lower legs were amputated at the age of one. He is the double amputee world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 metres events and runs with the aid of Cheetah Flex-Foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs. Initially, the IAAF banned him from participating; however in May 2008 the CAS overturned the earlier ruling allowing him to compete at the Beijing Olympics 2008. In March 2011 he ran the 400m qualifying time for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Known as the "Blade Runner" and "the fastest man on no legs"

Oscar Pistorius

In detail

Oscar Pistorius was born with five digits on each hand and two toes on each tiny foot. Each leg was missing its fibula. In 2006, he was appointed an ambassador of 'Soul of Africa', a Mozambique-based project that focuses on the needs of landmine victims and people with disabilities throughout the continent. He is a former rugby and water polo player who remarkably took the silver medal over 400 meters in the 2007 South African National Championships competing against able-bodied runners. That gave rise to the exciting possibility of him competing in the Beijing Olympic Games for South Africa. He has now broken his own world records 27 times and is still working toward becoming the fastest sprinter in the world. He won the 200m gold in the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships.
