In detail

During his time as Secretary of State, Iain undertook the most significant programme of welfare reform in modern times, transforming the benefit and pension systems, as well as employment services and support. Perhaps the most significant reforms were the introduction of Universal Credit, the Work Programme and the Single Tier Pension. Iain was elected Member of Parliament for Chingford in 1992, and re-elected in 1997 as Member of Parliament for the re-drawn constituency of Chingford and Woodford Green. Iain was promoted to William Hague's Shadow Cabinet in 1997 as Shadow Secretary of State for Social Security, moving to Shadow Secretary of State for Defence in 1999. In 2001 Iain was elected Leader of the Conservative Party. After stepping down in 2003 he set up the CSJ, an independent think tank which is committed to tackling poverty and social breakdown.
