Former German Chancellor

With 16 years in power, a post-war political record, and having won four consecutive general elections Helmut Kohl is arguably Germany's most successful Chancellor. He played a significant role in European integration and was a key player in ending the Cold War. Undoubtedly, one of his finest hours came, when Germany was re-unified in 1990.

Most recently Dr Kohl received the 2005 International Leadership Award for contributions to global peace and security from the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations.

He studied history in Heidelberg and in 1966 he became Minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1973 he was elected as Chairman of the German Christian Democratic Union, CDU. He was elected German Chancellor in 1982.
