Hicham El Guerrouj is a world record setting middle distance athlete and credited by some as the greatest middle-distance runner of all time as well as the "King of the Mile". He has now moved up to compete in long distance events. He is the world record holder for the 1,500 meters, the mile and the 2,000 meters and is the athlete with the best record in both events in the last decade.

His sporting career is marked by various recognitions such as the award to humanitarian effort from the IAAF and in 2003 he was elected as member of the committee; he is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In September 2004 King Mohammed VI of Morocco decorated him with the "Cordon de Commandeur". In 2004 he was awarded with the Principe the Asturias sports prize.
