Steve Backley is Britain's most successful Javelin thrower - ever! He has won the European Championships on four occasions and the Commonwealth Games three times. He made the World top ten every year since 1989 and on three occasions was World number one. After 7 Gold medals, a world record, two Olympic silver medals and one bronze, Steve Backley finally hung up his javelin at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

The Sidcup-born javelin thrower was awarded an MBE in 1995 after winning European and Commonwealth gold the previous summer. That double was a feat he also achieved in 2002 and was then awarded the OBE. His victory in Berlin was his fourth consecutive European gold, making him the first male athlete to achieve such a feat.
