Craig Brown

Former Coach to the Scottish National Side

Craig Brown is former coach to the Scottish National Side and was manger of Preston North End Football Club until the end of August 2004.

As a youngster Craig drew attention for his impressive footballing skills, winning junior, youth and schoolboy international honours before starting an impressive spell at Glasgow Rangers (his home team) at the tender age of just 19 years old. He left Ibrox in 1962 and continued playing first class football firstly with Dundee and then with the Scottish League winning Fallkirk side, before retiring through injury at the end of the 1971 season.

Just three years after retiring from the game Craig returned to the sport firstly as assistant manager of Motherwall before embarking on a marathon 10 year stint as the whip-cracker at Clyde football club. As a part-time manager he secured a respectable collection of silverware for the club including winning the Second Division Championship whilst lecturing in the primary education arena.

Craig returned to football full-time in 1986 when he was appointed assistant to Andy Roxborough, the Scotland Manager, and immediately he stamped his authority and leadership skills on the Scottish youth sides taking the Under-16 side to the World Championship finals and the Under 21 side to the UEFA semi-finals.

In 1993 he replaced Andy Roxborough as caretaker manager before being given the job full-time just two months later. Craig's Scotland side failed to qualify for the USA World Cup in 1994, but ensured a place at Euro '96 and the World Cup finals in France in 1998.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game, Craig was honoured with a CBE in the Queen's Birthday honours list before stepping down as Scotland's manager in October 2001. It was not long before Craig was back at the forefront of the game when he signed for Preston in April of this year.

The charismatic and driven Scot is now highly sought after as a motivational speaker for his wealth of experience and impressive career in the professional game.
