The global speaker bureau
Franziska van Almsick is a German swimmer best known for winning her fist Olympic medal at the age of 14 at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. In 1993, she was named by Swimming World magazine as the Female World Swimmer of the Year. From 1992 through to 2004, she won 10 medals at the Olympics as a freestyler, although she did not win an Olympic gold medal.
"She is one of the greatest European female swimmers ever"
Franziska was World Champion in the 100 free in 1994, but her greatest successes have come at the European Championships, where in both 1993 and 1995 she won six gold medals at that meet. Her medals have come in the 100 and 200 free and the relay events for Germany. Her championships at the 1993 Europeans were in the sprint freestyle events (50, 100, 200) and the three relays, while in 1995 she increased her distance a bit, winning over 100, 200, and 400 freestyle, and again anchoring all three German relay teams to victory. Her beauty and swim prowess have brought her great fame in Germany.
