Gene Kranz

Flight Director of the Apollo 13 Mission & Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient

Gene Kranz is best known for his role in directing the successful Mission Control team efforts to save the crew of Apollo 13. He retired from NASA in 1994 after 37 years of federal service. He has received numerous awards and honours, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he received from President Nixon for the Apollo 13 Mission, and his designation as Distinguished Member of the Senior Executive Service by President Reagan. He has been the subject of movies, documentary films, books and periodical articles.

In detail

After receiving his BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Parks Collage, Gene Kranz was commissioned in the US Air Force. Gene Kranz joined the NASA Space Task Group at Langley, Virginia in 1960, and was assigned the position of Assistant Flight Director for Project Mercury. In 1968 he was selected as Division Chief for Flight Control and in 1970 took over the leadership of the "Tiger Team" which brought the Apollo 13 spaceship safely back to earth demonstrating extraordinary courage and heroism.
