Captain Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III is an American airline transport pilot who is renowned for successfully carrying out the emergency water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in 2009, thus preventing any loss of life. There were 155 people on the plane.

A former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, he has served as an instructor and Air Line Pilots Association safety chairman, accident investigator and national technical committee member. He has been employed by US Airways since 1980 and in total has over 40 years of flying experience and is in charge of a safety consulting business, Safety Reliability Methods Inc. His ALPA safety work led to the development of a Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular.
