Bono is the lead singer with the world's biggest rock band, U2 and is also one of the most persuasive champions of the downtrodden. Bono has become stunningly effective in bringing the world's most powerful leaders to take seriously the problems of AIDS and African poverty. Most recently, the organisation groups One and Data, both co-founded by Bono, have merged in the US to form a single organisation, One, helping to tackle poverty, especially in Africa.

In 2005, Bono organised the Live 8 concerts alongside Bob Geldof with the aim of pressuring G8 leaders into following his recipe for ending world poverty. In 2002, Bono co-founded the organisation DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa). After U2's historic Live Aid performance in 1985, Bono travelled to Ethiopia helping with a famine relief project. The experience shocked him and ignited a determination to work for change. Many credit him as the driving force behind the US government's recent dramatic increase in AIDS funding. Bono has received a number of awards for his music and activism, including the highest non military honour given in the USA, the Legion D'Honneur from the French Government in 2003 and an honorary British knighthood in 2007.
