TROOPER, Iron Maiden’s hugely successful beer brand, has unveiled their latest addition to the ranks and this time it’s a lager!

After giving the rock star treatment to 5 different ales and porters, it’s taken the brewing duo of Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, and Robinsons’ Brewery head brewer Martyn Weeks over two years to perfect their unique take on a lager.  The result?  One of the most complex beers that Robinsons have ever produced, with a unique flavour profile of a doubled fermented lager made with authentic Japanese saké yeast.

As Bruce said about Sun and Steel:

“This has been such an exciting project. I had a crazy idea to try and make a saké infused lager and over two and a half years later, here we are! I know Martyn and the team at Robinsons have had to become mad scientists to make this work but the end result is a really unique hybrid beer that tastes fantastic. TROOPER fans have been asking for a lager, and here it is. I bet you would never have guessed we would do it like this though!”

So how did it happen?  The idea for Sun and Steel was conceived following a meeting between Bruce and friend of the band George Yusa, who is also owner of the 300 year old family run Okunomatsu Saké Brewery in Fukushima. With a brewing process not so dissimilar to beer, Bruce was fascinated by the concept of combining the flavour profiles of beer and saké together and approached long-term brewing collaborators Robinsons’ Brewery.

To make this work, authentic saké yeast was supplied by George. Permission was also needed, and given, by the Japanese government to brew it. The TROOPER team have been carefully cultivating the yeast and experimenting with recipes ever since.

Their hard work has paid off and Sun and Steel was born.  A hybrid beer brewed using two different types of yeast. A lager yeast for the initial fermentation. The saké yeast for the second fermentation. The result is a pilsner style lager infused with a delicate fruit flavour.

Named after the Iron Maiden song from their 1983 Piece of Mind album, inspired by the life of Japanese Samurai Miyamoto Musashi, Sun and Steel is the 6th beer in the Trooper range.

You can get your hands on it from 6th May in the UK and from 12th May worldwide. Fans who want to be the first to pre-order and hear the latest news and behind the scenes information from Sun and Steel can sign up for exclusive mailings from Robinsons Brewery.
