Prior to Washington, Sir Christopher was Ambassador in Germany, Press Secretary to Prime Minister John Major and Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe, speech writer to three Labour Foreign Secretaries and, among other postings, spent 5 years in the British Embassy in Moscow. After retiring from the Diplomatic Service in 2003, he was for 6 years Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, coinciding with the start of the phone-hacking scandal. Since then he has become a prolific radio and television commentator on international affairs and the media. Sir Christopher is Chairman of the Pagefield Advisory Board and a Non-Executive Director of the Arbuthnot Banking Group.
