Former Professional Cyclist
Chris Boardman is a former professional cyclist, Olympic gold medalist, and pioneering innovator in cycling technology, widely regarded as one of Britain’s most influential figures in the sport. Rising to prominence after winning gold in the individual pursuit at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Boardman went on to achieve success on both the track and road, breaking multiple world records and wearing the coveted yellow jersey at the Tour de France.

Chris accumulated innumerable national titles before bursting onto the scene in 1992 when he won gold at the Barcelona Olympics in the 4000m pursuit. This achievement turned him into a household name almost overnight and he was awarded an MBE. Beyond competition, he became known for his technical expertise, helping to design groundbreaking bikes and later championing cycling advocacy and policy in the UK. Today, his legacy extends well beyond racing, blending athletic achievement, innovation, and a commitment to making cycling more accessible and sustainable. Chris was appointed as National Active Travel Commissioner in June 2022 by the Transport Secretary. Before this Chris was Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester and the first ever Greater Manchester Cycling and Walking Commissioner.
