Few international politics Speakers can draw on such extensive first-hand experience of the political developments that have transformed Europe and the transatlantic alliance. Dr. Christoph von Marschall began his journalistic career during the dramatic collapse of communism, reporting from Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania in 1989–90. He subsequently covered the integration of Central and Eastern European countries into the EU and NATO, giving him an unusually deep understanding of Europe’s eastern dimension.

His career in Washington has been equally distinguished. As the only German newspaper correspondent in the White House Press Corps after Barack Obama took office, Dr. von Marschall gained exceptional access to U.S. political decision-making. He later returned to Washington as the first Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the ZEIT Foundation and German Marshall Fund, reporting from Donald Trump’s White House and examining the changing expectations between America and Europe.

In 2024–25, Dr. von Marschall served as Global Europe Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, observing the 2024 U.S. presidential election and its implications for Europe. His 2025 book, Black Tuesday: Why a War with Russia Looms and How the Federal Government Can Prevent It, explores Germany’s foreign and security-policy challenges and the consequences of Trump’s second term.

His work has earned numerous honours, including the German-American Commentary Award, German-Polish Journalism Award, Lucius D. Clay Medal and, in 2025, the Karl Klasen Prize for transatlantic reporting.
