Samantha has built an exceptional career at the intersection of engineering, aviation, and human spaceflight. After training as a fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force, she was selected as an astronaut by the European Space Agency, going on to complete two long-duration missions aboard the International Space Station. During her first mission, Futura (2014–2015), she spent nearly 200 days in orbit, setting a then-record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. She later returned to space for the Minerva mission in 2022, where she made history as the first European woman to command the ISS and carried out a spacewalk, further cementing her role as a pioneer in European space exploration. Throughout her career, Cristoforetti has been recognised with numerous national and international honours for her contributions to science, exploration, and public engagement.
